I decided a couple weeks ago to start a storyboard project of my own for practice based on a short script treatment i came up with. Here are a few panels.
SHAY LURIE / Gutbomb / 5:29
In 2012, after wrapping Superjail! Season 3, Joe Jurewicz and I collaborated on a short film. We came up with the Gutbomb idea one night at Joe’s place in Bushwick, Brooklyn soon after I was starting to settle into a food coma, on account of the burger in my belly. Joe had an idea of a burger at a diner walking up to a patron in vaudevillian fashion and punching him in the stomach. That was the birth of The Gutbomb. On the way home, I wrote a quick synopsis, and the idea started to quickly grow into something more.
The Gutbomb Express.
I began to imagine this world inspired by John Carpenter films, founded on the classic road movies of the 70’s and 80’s. We would populate the world with the film actors from those movies playing characters in our own B-movie. The entire opening sequence would pay homage to John Carpenter’s Big Trouble In Little China and I tasked Joe at writing the monologue. Joe and I bounced ideas into the script and collaborated on some of the characters, props and dialog. Actually, I was kind of obsessed with John Carpenter during the making of this short and I tried to emulate the music from Big Trouble, recording it all myself. I did the sound mix and editing too.
This was the first narrative film I had ever made, where I wrote a script, recorded voice actors with dialog and told a story. I had never scored a film neither, so that was also a challenge. I entered it into Brooklyn’s Animation Block Party in 2013. I was very proud to have screened it for a local audience and have my wife and her family in attendance.
I live in Brooklyn and work for Titmouse NY on Superjail!, Metalocalypse, Venture Brothers and Turbo.
